Who is the Summerville Miracle League?
SML is a 501(c)(3) – an all volunteer group of local business leaders who banded together to start the Summerville franchise of the Miracle League. We are committed to providing an opportunity for kids with special needs to play America’s pastime: baseball.
What have we accomplished?
In May of 2008, Board member Steve Hatton signed a 10 year lease with Town of Summerville for use of Saul Alexander Park. Construction on the new field began.
By April 2009 the new field and dugouts were complete and 22 players came to opening day. We now have about 200 special needs children and adults in the league. 6 minor league teams (kids ages 5 – 18) and 4 major league teams (Adults 18-105) play an 8-week schedule in the Spring and Fall. The field is a state of the art rubberized surface that is kid friendly and easy to maneuver with wheelchairs and other ambulatory devices.
In September 2010, the restroom building completed, and a year later in September of 2011, the concession building was finished. As a result of the 2012 Southern Flame Festival, sun shades were added to the bleachers.
Why should you help?
This annual fundraiser helps to supply uniforms and maintain the field and facilities. There is no cost to the players or their parents, and none of the staff is paid – we are all volunteers. Ultimately, our purpose is to help these kids dress in uniforms, make plays in the field and round the bases just like their main stream peers.
“Every child deserve the chance to play baseball”
